About
the Gilead Outreach & Referral Center
How We
Started
The Gilead Outreach and Referral Center was organized in October 2000
as a project of United Power for Action and Justice, to help uninsured
persons in the Chicagoland area claim health benefits for which they are
qualified. We are a not-for-profit organization, the result of a unique
public-private partnership formed around a shared commitment to the common
good. Deeply rooted in community institutions (congregations, neighborhood
organizations, health care centers, unions, and others), and funded by
both government and business, the Gilead Center is a working example of
the power and promise of a community in action.
Our Mission
The Gilead Outreach and Referral Center connects uninsured and underinsured
individuals and families throughout metropolitan Chicago with affordable
health care benefits and services for which they are eligible.
How We
Carry Out Our Mission
- Building
awareness of publicly supported health insurance options
- Helping
eligible residents enroll and obtain benefits
- Helping
residents find and receive affordable primary and preventive healthcare
- Assisting
key groups of uninsured individuals, including racial and ethnic minorities,
those who are working, and those who lost insurance in a move from welfare
to work
- Promoting
and developing an extensive partnership of groups and individuals committed
to supporting the cause of reaching and serving the uninsured in the
Chicago area.
Our Beliefs
and Values
- Both private
and public sectors must collaborate to expand health care access and
coverage for the uninsured.
- Primary
care is a cost-effective alternative to emergency care and hospitalization
that will be required if medical conditions are left untreated.
- The Gilead
Center values health care for all and works toward an effective system
for increasing coverage of the maximum number of people for the least
amount of public funds.
The Gilead
Outreach and Referral Center is an independent project of United Power
for Action and Justice, part of its multi-phase campaign to reach and
serve the uninsured in metropolitan Chicago.
